OXNARD, Calif. — The city continues to track a major roadway and rail-crossing project where Rice Avenue meets Fifth Street, also designated State Route 34. In its online capital improvement directory, Oxnard identifies the Rice Avenue and Fifth Street grade separation as an in-progress transportation and drainage project.
What is a grade separation?
Grade separation means separating vehicles and trains vertically rather than forcing them to cross at the same road level. The city’s project description calls for a six-lane Rice Avenue bridge over the railroad tracks. The goal is to improve safety and reduce road-rail conflicts, while traffic conditions and the final benefits depend on engineering, construction and usage after opening.
Where residents can find updates
The city’s project directory provides a way to examine project-specific progress and sign up for updates. The presence of a project under the in progress label does not mean every stage has begun or that all lanes and road connections are already open. Construction schedules, costs, route diversions and completion dates must be obtained from the current project records, not assumed from an older timeline.
Other work on Oxnard’s list
Oxnard’s public portal also identifies park improvements, alley reconstruction and citywide street projects. Keeping those separate from the rail crossing is important: funding and work schedules differ from project to project. Commuters should rely on posted construction and traffic alerts for actual road restrictions.
